General Appearance & Structure
Form: A fast-growing, deciduous small tree with a spreading, umbrella-like canopy and graceful, drooping branches.
Trunk & Bark: Distinctive smooth green bark on both the trunk and branches, which allows the tree to perform photosynthesis even when it loses its leaves.
Thorns: Small, sharp spines are typically found at the base of the leaf stalks.
Foliage & Flowers
Leaves: Feathery and strap-like with tiny leaflets. In drought conditions, the leaflets drop quickly to conserve water, leaving behind the long, green midribs.
Flowers: Showy, bright yellow blossoms growing in loose clusters. One petal often features orange or reddish spots as it matures.
Fruit: Produces tan, leathery seed pods (legumes) that are constricted between the seeds.
Common Uses
Ornamental: Widely used in xeriscaping, urban parks, and roadside planting for its vibrant color.
Light Shade: Provides a "filtered" or "dappled" shade that allows grass or smaller shrubs to grow underneath.
Windbreaks: Often used as a hardy barrier or screen in desert reclamation projects.
