Size: It is one of the largest Agave species in the world, with the entire rosette capable of reaching several meters in diameter.
Leaves: Form a massive rosette; the leaves are very wide, thick, and fleshy, adapted for storing water.
Color: Typically features a dark green to glaucous bluish-green color (hence its scientific name atrovirens, meaning "dark green").
Spines: The margins are lined with sharp teeth, and each leaf terminates in a very strong, rigid terminal spine that can be several centimeters long.
Flowering: It is monocarpic (blooms only once at the end of its life, after decades). It sends up a towering flower spike (up to 10 meters high) with yellow blossoms, after which the main plant dies, leaving pups at the base.
Habitat: Native to the high-altitude, arid regions of Mexico, making it highly drought-tolerant and resilient to heat.
