Description

General Appearance & Growth

Plant Type: A dense, compact, and evergreen woody shrub or small tree.

Growth & Shaping: Highly adaptable to shearing and pruning. It is a favorite for topiary art (shaping into globes, cones, or cubes) and is widely used for Bonsai.

Size: Easily controlled by pruning; it can reach 2 to 3 meters (6 to 10 feet) in gardens if left unclipped.

Foliage & Branches

Leaves: Small, oval-to-circular with rounded tips. They are thick, leathery, and smooth to the touch.

Color: Features a vibrant, glossy, deep green color that reflects light beautifully, giving the plant a very healthy and polished look.

Branches: Highly branched and tightly packed, creating a solid, full, and opaque screen of foliage.

Environmental Needs & Care

Light: Thrives in bright light. It does excellent in full sun outdoors and requires very bright, indirect light when kept indoors.

Watering: Moderate. Water only when the top inch of soil feels dry. It is somewhat drought-tolerant once established but highly dislikes waterlogged soil (overwatering).

Soil: Prefers fertile, rich, and well-draining potting mixes (like a blend of peat moss and perlite).

Climate: Loves warm and humid environments (perfect for tropical and subtropical climates), but needs protection from freezing temperatures and cold drafts.

Uses & Characteristics

Landscaping: Primarily used as a formal living hedge, border plant, or as a sculpted accent feature in large pots at entrances and walkways.

Indoor Plant: Performs well in homes or offices, provided it receives adequate bright light near windows.

Resilience: A very sturdy variety of Ficus that is generally pest-resistant and handles urban dust and air pollution remarkably well.

Tip: To maintain its dense, spherical shape and stimulate fresh, vibrant green growth, trim the outer tips regularly.
