Succeeds in full sun and in light shade. Prefers well-drained, poor, coarse, grained and stony soils.

Water: Regular watering schedule that allows a bit of time for the soil to dry out between waterings.

Dendrocalamus strictus is widely distributed in India, especially in semi-dry and dry zones along plains and hilly tracts to an elevation of 1000 m, and can tolerate temperatures as low as − 5 °C and as high as 45 °C.

To be carried out as per the advice of an expert after testing the soil once the clumps have established. Responds well to NPK and organic fertilizers like compost, vermi-compost and dried farm yard manure. Organic fertilizers are  recommended if grown for edible shoots.
